Our History

Part of what makes Shadybrook so unique and special is its long history as a campground on Lake Windermere.  In 1951, a farming couple, Lawrence and Violet Sholinder visited the Columbia Valley for a vacation and decided they couldn’t leave such a beautiful place.  They purchased farm land in Windermere down by the lake and raised livestock for a few years. In 1955 they opened Shadybrook Resort to campers, charging $1 per night. Immediately, the Sholinder’s realized that their livestock did not appreciate the lakeside location as much as these campers and  soon their camping Resort became very popular. They expanded the sites, built a few cabins and added a marina.  In 1970, their daughter and son in law Georgina and Bill DuBois bought Shadybrook and continued expanding the resort, adding more sites and converting it to seasonal rentals. Bill and Georgina’s son Mike DuBois, the current owner, purchased the resort in 1998.  After 3 generations, he continues to improve the resort so his family can also share in the magic and memories of summers at the lake.
